That's More Like It!!

Hold onto your hats, Premier League fans, the title race is back on. A Chelsea draw, apathetic Manchester United loss, and a well deserved Arsenal win over Liverpool means that the top 3 teams are now separated by 6 points, 3 if Arsenal win their game in hand.

2 weeks removed from an embarrassing 3-0 at home to Chelsea, Arsenal produced a great second half display to rescue a crucial fixture. Lacking pace, imagination, and interest in the first half, Arsenal did a complete 180 after halftime, dominating possession and eventually tiring out an already drained Liverpool side. Glen Johnson’s own goal was fortunate, sure, but Walcott was lurking if the defender made any mistake and would have surely tucked it away anyhow.Andrei Arshavin again excelled up front, providing a stunning match-winner.Cesc Fabregas was again inspirational in central midfield, providing excellent through balls for forwards to run onto as well as distributing and inspiring an impressive passing display, as we have come to expect.

One area of huge concern was Manuel Almunia. Relatively solid for most of the season, Almunia had one of his worst games last night despite only allowing only one goal.Constantly flopping and floundering in net, the Spanglish Keeper never looked comfortable. Just when all parts of the team seemed to be working together, Almunia raised a new doubt for Gunners fans. While there should be no reason tosit him, the success of Vito Mannone in net earlier this season should worry Almunia. Arsene has show that he is not afraid to make bold tactical moves, and substituting Aluminia would certainly qualify as one.

The next few weeks should be an excellent opportunity for Arsenal. With no European play until late Febuaray and an FA cup tie on January 3rd, this is the time for Arsenal to gain ground on Chelski. The opposition will certainly be easyenough, as the only top 10 team the Gunners face until January 31stis Aston Villa (twice). While Chelsea and Man U also have similarly soft schedules, Chelsea will lose many crucial players to African Nations Cup duty and Manchester United still have significant issues to figure out defensively. The time is tight for a surge from the North Londoners.

Transfer-wise, don’t expect much from Arsenal. Despite the pleadings of Cesc Fabregas and others to sign a replacement striker for Van Persie, Arsenal’s win on Sunday was just further evidence to support Wegner’s stubbornness regarding bringing in new players. However, there are a few rumors floating around regarding Arsenal. Ruud Van Nistelrooy, Marouane Chamakah, and Carlton Cole have all been rumored to be heading to the Emirates. Another possibility is Luca Toni. A big, physical striker, Toni could come on the cheap due to his lack of form at Bayern Munich and his public plea for a transfer out of Germany. Time will only  tell if Arsenal make any moves. Wegner’s recent press conferences seem to suggest not, but remember this: last December, the transfer window seemed locked shut at Arsenal until one diminutive footballer made his way through. His name was Andrei Arshavin.
