Premier League Review: Gameweek 10 - Liverpool Makes A Statement

We know we have been a little bit inconsistent as of late but the crew of the Goalmouth Scramble has had a bit of trouble finding times that work out for everyone so in place of this weekend's podcast I give you my breakdown of the matches.

Six matches were played on Saturday, but let's start with Wolves and Villa.

Wolverhampton - 1 v Aston Villa - 1
Wolves desperately needed points here after only corraling four points in their last five leading up to last weekend. Aston Villa are a good team so asking for a win from Wolves was probably asking too much. We had a scoreless draw until the 79th minute when Gabby Agbonlahor broke the deadlock with a strike from right around the penalty mark. Some great movement saw Agbonlahor settle a pass behind him from Emile Heskey that he turned on a finished. It took only four minutes for the home team to equalize however by way of Sylvan Ebanks-Blake's penalty kick for his first of the season. Remember Ebanks-Blake was the leading scorer in the Championship last season, but has struggled with injuries during this Premier League season. It's disappointing in my opinion for Villa to give up the equaliser late, Wolves were able to fight back and gain a much needed point.

Hull City - 0 v Portsmouth - 0
To take a page out of Curtis' book.....Okay and that was the match. I won't spend too much time on this one because, let's be honest, we all know only 18 people in the world actually enjoyed this game. By far the most irrelevant game title wise this week, but this match could end up having an effect on the relegation battle. Hull City and Portsmouth are both so bad that neither could score on each other and they just played keep away all game. I really have no breakdown on this game as you can probably tell by now, but if I could tell the team's one thing it would be that the point of soccer or football or whatever you like to call it is to score more than your opponent and to keep this in mind next time they step onto the pitch.

Birmingham - 2 v Sunderland - 1
This result was one that caught my attention. Birmingham finally got a win, something they hadn't done in the three previous matches. They have played well this season but not well enough to get all three points. I think I am most impressed that Birmingham got this victory over a Sunderland team that is playing pretty well in my opinion. Liam Ridgewell opened his account for the season in the 37th minute on a header from Larsson's free kick to put Birmingham up 1-0. The Blues came out and took a two goal advantage three minutes into the second half on James McFadden's second of the year. Cameron Jerome had a superb flick-on to McFadden just inside the box where he would finish as well. Sunderland got a goal back in the 82nd minute on an own goal by Scott Dann, but it wouldn't be enough as they dropped the result 2-1. Sunderland sit in 8th right now but are within striking distance of 4th and 5th while Birmingham have climbed away from the relegation zone, at least for this week, into 15th.

Tottenham - 0 v Stoke City - 1
I don't really feel like talking about this match, but I will because that's part of the healing process. Spurs dominated this match on the stat line:

Shots (on goal): Tottenham 21 (9) v Stoke 11 (1)
Posession: Tottenham 64% v Stoke 36%

So as you can imagine, losing this one doesn't look to good on Spurs side of things. The one shot on goal hit the back of the net while Spurs could not break through the defense of Sorensen, Faye, Shawcross, Collins and Wilkinson despite their offensive prowess so far this campaign. I was for sure that with Jermain Defoe suspended that Peter Crouch would step in and score a goal, leading Spurs to the win. It was a Stoke player who stole the show however. Ricardo Fuller absolutely depantsed a Spurs defender in the corner, drove in, and served a great ball for Glenn Whelan who made no mistake on a one time shot. This win is huge in my opinion for Stoke as it vaults them into 9th place and secures their first win on the road this season. Hopefully they can use this to build off of for their upcoming matches.

Burnley - 1  v Wigan - 3
Freaking Wigan. Never really know what to expect out of them. Burnley have been good at home so it was tough to see a dominiating performance from one of the most up and down teams on the road but they pulled it out. Wigan won behind two goals from striker Hugo Rodallega, taking his season total to five, and another for good measure from Emerson Boyce. The stats show an even match but you would have to say Wigan made more of their chances than did Burnley. Burnley, now tied for the league lead in goals against at 22, drops to 11th place and need to find points in their upcoming matches to stay near the top half. With the win, Wigan move into 10th place on 13 points and will look to get points for the third straight week next weekend.

Chelsea - 5 v Blackburn - 0
The romp of the weekend and who would say they didn't see this coming. Didier Drogba once again sat out in the midweek Champions League matches due to a suspension so he was fresh and Chelsea was playing at home. Gael Givet scored for Chelsea despite wearing a Blackburn shirt in the 20th to keep things off and suddenly things came spiraling down for Big Sam's men. Frank Lampard scored his first in the 48th and added a second from the penalty spot just eleven minutes later, seven minutes after Michael Essien had put Chelsea up 2-0. Drogba squashed what hope Blackburn had with the Blues fifth goal in the 64th with a headed finish. This win gave Chelsea 24 points to date and vaulted them into first place after a certain result on Sunday.

Bolton - 3 v Everton - 2
Who is this Bolton team? Three goals once again? This was a very nice win for Bolton and another in a string of puzzling results from an underacheiving Everton team this season. Everton are only on eleven points, good enough for 14th right now while Bolton have the same points but sit in 12th. I understand Everton have played only nine games but they should be doing much better than they currently are. Chung-yong Lee (I don't know who he is either don't worry) started the scoring in the 16th minute for Bolton and Gary Cahill followed Lee's example in the 27th minute to put Bolton up by two. Louis Saha was not going down without a fight however and netted his sixth goal in eight games in the 32nd minute. Marouane Fellaini equalised for Everton ten minutes into the second half but summer signing Ivan Klasnic scored his first Premier League goal in dramatic fashion, leading Bolton to a victory four minutes from time. Great win for Bolton here, but I want to see more out of Everton.

Manchester City - 2 v Fulham - 2
This entertaining match unfortunately played second fiddle to a slightly bigger match but failed to disappoint. The two sides played to a nil nil draw in the first half before all four goals were scored in the second half. Joleon Lescott got on the scoresheet for the first time in a Manchester City shirt in the 54th minute. Lescott's goal was followed by another from a hot Martin Petrov in the 60th minute. Fulham suddenly woke up out a slumber two minutes later when Damien Duff found the back of the net to bring the visitors within a goal. And then......the American......Clint Dempsey, brought Fulham level with a goal in the 68th minute to get a point for his side. City were more offensive in this one and should be disappointed to lose their two goal lead, but credit needs to be given to Fulham for fighting back in this one. Man City now sit in 6th place and Fulham occupy 13th.

Liverpool - 2 v Manchester United - 0
First off: don't trust anything Rafa or Sir Alex say about their key players playing in big matches. Torres and especially Rooney were not supposed to play in this one. Both did. And Torres made his presence felt with the winning goal in the 65th minute. The match was entertaining up til this point where Torres finished past Edwin van der Sar. Things got a bit nasty near the end as Nemanja Vidic saw his second yellow card of the day resulting in his third red card in as many games against Liverpool I believe. Javier Mascherano saw Vidic leave the field and decided that it looked so fun that he too wanted to received a red card and did only a minute later. With both sides down to ten men, substitute David Ngog put the finishing touches on a very solid win for Liverpool at Anfield. This was a victory that Liverpool needed badly in my opinion. Their form had not been impressive so far this season and a definitive win like this could go a long way in boosting team morale and cooling the seat upon which Rafa Benitez sits. For Manchester United this was not their best performance needless to say. They will be fine and will just need to pull themselves together for their next Premier League match.

West Ham - 2 v Arsenal - 2
I spoke about underachieving when I covered the Everton game, but West Ham are the most underachieving team to date, sitting in 19th place. All West Ham has is a dismal six points whichis almost hard to believe with the poor performances of other teams to date. Arsenal, the league's leading scorers, went up early with a 16th minute goal from Robin van Persie followed by a goal from William Gallas in the 37th. Arsenal went into the half feeling pretty good about things but Carlton Cole, who is quietly having a decent season (9 games, 5 goals, 1 assist - not counting his assist to Defoe against Spurs), changed Arsenal's thoughts in the 74th minute. Just six minutes later Arsenal gave up a penalty that Alessandro Diamanti slotted home to equalise things. Scott Parker was then sent off in the 85th minute, giving Arsenal five minutes plus stoppage time to find a winner while being a man up. It was not to be however as the match ended in a draw. This is a great comback for West Ham and a poor draw for Arsenal after leading by two goals (I feel like I've already said this, oh wait, I think I see a pattern this week). I'm not worried though for the Gunners who will bounce back and continue to set the net on fire. West Ham needs to build off this match and get themselves out of the relegation zone as soon as possible.

Thanks for putting up with us while our schedules are crazy right now but the podcasts will be back as soon as possible. What did you all think of the results this weekend? Let us know in the comments.
