Nice Trick! But Can You Do It When It Matters?
Yep, that's the pessimist in me reflecting on back-to-back runaway winsfor Chelsea this week. True, the team looks to be back to their earlyseason form but it's safe to say that the competition has hardly been atest.
Most importantly, neither Atletico or Blackburn wereable to test Chelsea's set piece marking which has been susceptible oflate. But you can bet that the forward pressure of Bolton and the classof Manchester United will do just that, and it will be crucial for theBlues to show they've addressed these issues at the training ground.Cech has not been tested since the gaffs of last weekend and he mustshow that his confidence is there. It's my personal opinion thatrunning into Tal Ben Haim in training a couple seasons ago (and thefractured skull thanks to Steven Hunt before that) has had a largeimpact on his play. He doesn't look confident on crosses into the boxand I think he's still wary of a possible collision in front. Just mytwo cents but if that's the case he really should be over that stuff bynow. I know those are horrendous injuries but he's a professional, forone, and secondly, he's wearing a freaking helmet.
That said,Chelsea did exactly what I felt they needed to do with their match-upsthis week. After a poor performance at Villa Park it was crucial forthem to gather some positive momentum for the weeks ahead. I called outFrank Lampard last weekend and he certainly answered his critics byplaying a major role in Chelsea's midfield, finally scoring a leaguegoal during the flow of play (as well as one from the spot). For methough it was the return of Joe Cole to the starting eleven that servedas the most positive aspect of a decidedly positive performance. Colelived up to the song fans sing for him by quite literally being"every-f***ing-where." He was a man playing for his future in the squadand helped his own cause with a bevy clever flicks and a whole lot ofpace and heart.
And I hope all you fantasy owners havelearned by now to stay away from Chelsea's midfield. Aside from Lampard(and he may even get rested from time to time) NO ONE is safe in thismidfield. Deco was rested after two quality starts and it's a good betthat the same could happen to Ballack next week as Malouda has been onthe shelf. So don't be a hero and try to play the odds, just stayaway.
