US National Team Player of the Year Announced Tomorrow

Tomorrow the US Player of the Year will be announced. I know this is old news and you have had it marked in your calendars for months now… right?

But for those of you who haven’t been counting down the days until the announcment, here’s a little info…

Up for the award are:

Jozy Altidore (Hull City, on loan from Villarreal) – He has the youth at only 19 and is already getting the international experience and making a great name for himself overseas. At just 18, he became the youngest player to score for the United States during a 2-2 draw against Mexico in 2008. On April 1 2009, he also became the youngest U.S. player to record a hat trick when the U.S. won 3-0 in the World Cup qualifying match against Trinidad & Tobago. Altidore has scored 8 goals in 19 games since his debut with the National Team in 2007. Personally I think Altidore would be a great pick for the winner. He brings a lot of what the U.S. team needs to be successful at the World Cup; drive to constantly get forward, a no-fear attitude when it comes to playing international stars/powerhouses, and a certain youthful “swagger” that brings an extra energy to the game. One thing Altidore needs to work on is his interview skills/promoting the U.S. team better… check out this clip from his recent interview on ESPN. Listen to his response to the question of whether the U.S. team is a powerhouse…. “Um in soccer?” (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SAS6M1apEqU)

Landon Donovan (Galaxy) - The 27-year-old five-time winner of the Honda Player of the Year Award, is the only player to be a finalist seven times. That right there deserves an award! Donovan is the all-time goalscorer for the U.S. National Team and is a driving force behind its success in World Cup qualifying this year. Let’s be honest, Donovan probably deserves to win. Without him up top the U.S. would have far fewer goals, and more importantly, far fewer goal scoring opportunities.  He takes the ball up field and creates great chances off of his passes and ability to find the open runner. If Donovan wins no one should be upset, but come one, we’ve seen it before and before and before….

Tim Howard (Everton) - The 30-year-old goalkeeper is a finalist for the Honda Player of the Year Award for the third year in a row. Named best goalkeeper at the Confederations Cup last summer, he has 48 U.S. caps since his debut in 2002. Let’s be honest, Tim Howard is one of my most favorite players ever for the U.S. side and probably could do anything and I would still love him. He keeps the team in games and there is nothing like watching the faces he makes while yelling at his back line after a praticularly close chance! There really isn’t anything else I can say about Howard without opening the flood gates as to how much I love him, so to save your time I will keep it simple; Howard would make a great MVP choice.

Let us know your thoughts on who will win and if you think anyone else’s names should have been thrown into the mix.

It's not Jozy...yet. Let's hope he plays well enough in the World Cup to get it next year (and by well I mean helping the US get back into at least the round of 16). From a club perspective you have Donovan who still plays in the MLS and Howard who was on fire at the end of last Prem season, but has been mediocre at best this fall. Internationally both were great at the Confed and I gave a lot of credit to Donovan for stepping up and leading by example. But Howard seemed to get the better press so my money is on him.

I have to agree with Nick, I would like to see Donovan get it but Howard will probably get it. It's a tough call. Jozy needs more time.

I think now I have a strong hold over the topic after going through the post.
