Bad, Old Habits Bite the Blues at Villa Park

No one had better seats for James Collins second half go-ahead goalthan the Chelsea defense. In fact, both Aston Villa goals came fromvirtually unmarked players on corners.

If you're a Chelseafan, no doubt the poor set-piece marking gave you flashbacks of theteam's woes toward the end of Big Phil's short stint at the helm. Atthat time and at their worst, Chelsea even allowed a third divisionSouthend United side to capitalize off of poor zonal marking on acorner in a January FA Cup replay. Fortunately for the West Londoners,Guus Hiddink road in from Russia with love and a white horse to managethe Blues to a very strong finish through the end of the 2008-2009season.

But this season their lapse in defense surely marksthe official end of the Ancelotti honeymoon at Stamford Bridge. Thiswill be a crucial moment for the Italian manager as he will bare thebrunt of the criticism should Chelsea fail to address their poormarking. There's no reason to assume that they won't fix things inleague play as hosting Blackburn next weekend carries with it a perfectopportunity to regain some of their earlier steam. But a tricky testawakes them in the Champions League with Atletico Madrid. I believe itis absolutely paramount that they head into their November 8 match withManchester United running on some positive momentum, so three pointsare a must on Wednesday. That's not to say that anyone can overlookBolton Wanderers. While they dropped points at Old Trafford today, theycontinue to threaten teams by pouring numbers forward and lumping longballs at the centerhalfs. Chelsea face Bolton in back-to-back leagueand cup matches and winning both would do well for their confidence.

Additionally, what's up with Frank Lampard. In my opinion, this season had to be hiscareer best if he were to finally emerge as a world class player. Lampshas done little to suggest he is ready to make that next step and mayperhaps lose the opportunity to do so. Ancelotti has recently featuredDeco front and center of the midfield, moving Frank out right withinthe diamond. He's also seen his freekick attempts drop significantly asDrogba seems to be the preferred weapon of choice. Aside fromdiminishing his fantasy stock, his recent form leads one to wonder ifhe may find himself affected by the rotation system, somethingseemingly unheard of in past seasons. The return of both Joe Cole andYuri Zhirkov bolsters an already packed and talented midfield and youjust have to wonder if Lampard will lose his "untouchable" status asthe season continues.
