US Forward Charlie Davies In Car Accident

Early yesterday morning United States Men's National Team forward Charlie Davies was involved in a car crash in Washington, DC where the team was staying in preparation for their World Cup Qualifying match against Costa Rica on Wednesday. Davies will not be taking part in that and likely not the World Cup either. He was rushed to the hospital after sustaining a lacerated bladder, a broken tibia and femur in his right leg, facial fractures and a fracture in his left elbow. He was in surgery to repair the bladder and leg injuries and is currently in serious by stable condition.

This couldn't have happened at a worse time for Charlie Davies and the USMNT. Davies had just signed a deal with French side Sochaux where he had made eight appearances, finding the back of the net twice. He burst onto the scene during this summer's FIFA Confederation's Cup scoring a goal in three appearances and becoming a driving force for the American offense. He added spark to the team during their run to the Confed Cup Final and that carried over into the recent World Cup Qualifying as well. His swagger had helped the USMNT and gave them more confidence when playing the big boys.

I can't tell you how lucky Charlie is to be alive. If you have seen the pictures of the car he was riding in you understand what I mean. If you have not I warn you that they are pretty bad. I can only assume Davies was sitting in the front passenger seat because the back was demolished. Ashley Roberta, 22, of Phoenix, MD was the sole fatality of the accident which saw the driver also taken to the hospital. I'm not going to post the pictures of the car up here because it is really hard to look at and think about, even as I write this.

Now all we can do is wait and pray for Davies, who is set to be in the hospital for at least a week and faces more surgery soon as well. If you would like to follow everything that is going on with Charlie I suggest you follow Grant Wahl's Twitter account, www.twitter.com/GrantWahl, he's doing a great job getting info out as soon as possible. The Goalmouth Scramble Crew sends its best to Charlie Davies and his family as they go through a life changing event. We can only hope for Charlie's sake that he can recover quickly and be able to play the beautiful game once again.
